Dear All

Dear Friends, Family and Patrons,

I've decided to do a regular blog to let all the people who
have supported and encouraged me over the ages know what I'm up to.  It is also for all the "old friends who've just met".  My life has always been charmed (I have all of you to thank for that) and now my art career is beginning to lift off the ground and I want you to know where its going.

Over the past ten years I have been living in Taiwan, Ghana and most recently Krakow, Poland. As a result I've had some amazing shows (Kramerbooks in DC, Hua Shan in Taipei, The DuBoise Center in Accra, Gallerii Marcholt in Katowice and Cafe Rio in Krakow...just to name a few). I've returned to the States where I've recently joined the dynamic and inspiring Artist's League in Alexandria, VA. I've participated in their "Patron's Show" and was recently juried in to the Women's History Months show, "Herstory" and the "Found" (found objects) show. Two days ago I learned that my submission for the Torpedo Visiting Artist program won a two month residency at the amazing Torpedo Factory Art Center. I will have a prime studio space where I can create, receive visitors and hopefully teach my guests. I can't begin to describe what a thrill this will be - I've been working for something like this since I left the UMASS Painting Department in 1994. We'll see what becomes of it all and where it takes me next.

Again, thank you for all your kind words, patronage, inspiration and direction over the years. I hope this little weblog will keep you in touch with where your kindness and generosity takes me.

Warm Regards,
Julian
This is my most recent submission for the "Found" show at the Artist League Gallery at the Torpedo Art Factory. It is approximately 42x21x3 inches. "Archetypeset Drawer" is made from mixed media that I found going back to 1983 (my Boyscout's "arrow of light" badge) up to last week's bird skull find under the deck of our house.  It is simply a playful snapshot of the past 25 years of my life.

Discussion/Critique Request

I have a date for a show (December 11th, 2007 at Faust in Krakow, Poland) and am working on a series of 23 images for the event. Ideally I'd like to get 5o images made by the beginning of December with the idea that I can pick and choose the best ones at that point as well as have a catalogue for folks to choose from. I want this blog to be about my art and its related tangents: Writing about my art. An open discussion and critique with willing participants. And the general transfer of ideas from my images to subjects and topics that arise. You see, with my older work I had a strong feeling as to what it was all about ("We never left Paradise...we just gained an ego and separated ourselves from it. As a result we see ourselves as not being a part of Nature and therefor don't see the effect that we can have by our very existance upon Nature. We need to accept our responsibilities of being a part of the world we live in.") Over the last three or four years my work is becoming something else. My artist statements are not as clear about my work as they used to be. My work is becoming more about people and their interactions with themselves, eachother and their environments and less about regaining an awareness of our place in Nature...at least that is what I feel...but perhaps I'm wrong...that is for all of us to help me decide. I feel the need for feedback from both close friends as well as random friends in order to help me define more of what my visual exploration is about. I need to know what affect/effect my work has on other people beside myself. I need this view in order to form a clearer personal and artistic statement. I look forward to your responses however big or small and the discussions that flow out of it all. I thank you for your future participation.

What Is A Polterzeitgeist?

What is a "Polterzeitgeist"? Simply put, it is the Spirit of the time. In detail, it is the culmination of hauntings, of vibrations, of seen and unseen forces flowing out of Newtonian vehicles, out of the Quantum to express themselves in the moment that we are all sharing. Polterzeitgeist is also a DJ moniker that I've held on to for the past five or so years whenever the occasion should require it. I now find myself in one of those occasions again where my hybridized handle will have some meaning and perhaps some use.

Please excuse me, I must take little minds to school and shopping carts off for hunting and gathering. More to come soon.
